What Is COSMOS Certification?

COSMOS is an international standard created specifically for natural and organic cosmetics. Rather than relying on a brand's own definition of what “natural” or “organic” means, COSMOS establishes criteria that certified products must meet and requires certification through an authorized independent certification body.

The standard considers much more than the ingredients inside a formula. It addresses ingredient origin and processing, product composition, manufacturing and storage, packaging, environmental management, labeling and certification controls.

For Rachel Perry, that independent verification brings another layer of transparency to the way we formulate.

COSMOS Organic + COSMOS Natural

Both signatures indicate that a product complies with the COSMOS standard. The distinction comes down primarily to the requirements around organic ingredient content.

COSMOS ORGANIC

For formulas that meet the COSMOS standard and its required thresholds for organic ingredients.

COSMOS NATURAL

For formulas that meet the COSMOS standard for natural cosmetics but do not meet the minimum organic percentages required for COSMOS Organic certification.

COSMOS certification looks beyond whether an ingredient simply comes from nature.

The standard is guided by principles that include encouraging organic agriculture and biodiversity, using natural resources responsibly, supporting cleaner manufacturing and processing, and integrating the principles of green chemistry.

Criteria address the origin and processing of ingredients used in certified formulas.

Certified products must meet defined composition requirements appropriate to their COSMOS Natural or COSMOS Organic designation.

Requirements extend to cleanliness, hygiene, traceability and responsible manufacturing practices.

Packaging is considered within the standard, including requirements intended to respect the environment.

The standard addresses environmental practices during manufacturing, including waste management, minimization and recycling.
